Baby Seal Found Off East Coast

A severely malnourished grey seal pup is in intensive care at the GSPCA after being found off a small beach near Bulwer Avenue.

The GSPCA received a call on Boxing Day afternoon saying there was a baby seal on the beach known as Frying Pan Bay.

Geoff George is the Shelter's head of narine mammals:

"We’ve called the pup Baby Shark, who is around one to two months old and should weigh more than 40kg but is very poorly, and only weighs 16.95kg.”

Baby Shark has made it through the night and we are giving him around the clock care.”

A seal colony lives on the islets known as The Humps to the north of Herm. These are close by, although it's not known if Baby Shark was born there.

He's the second seal to be found off Guernsey needing care this winter breeding season and one of four at the Shelter. The other two came from Jersey.

Once again, the GSPCA is appealing for fresh, quality fish, like mackerel and herring, to help feed him.
