90% of islanders regularly consume Guernsey milk

Guernsey dairy says its latest customer survey shows strong support for the local industry, despite plant-based alternatives becoming more popular.

2,400 locals took part in a survey conducted by Island Global Research.

It found nine out of ten islanders still regularly consume Guernsey milk - with 88% saying the product quality was 'excellent'.

However, 18% said Guernsey milk was too expensive, and 36% said their household consumed non-dairy alternatives.

That is a 5% rise from 2019.

Guernsey Dairy's Managing Director Andrew Tabel says that is a concern for the industry.

"It’s on our risk register, and we are channelling a lot of our energy into consumer awareness.

Particularly, if they have any animal welfare concerns because the Guernsey Dairy has accreditation in regards to the RSPCA farmer assured scheme, and that provides a level of confidence in the industry, which could maybe change their minds.

It’s generally the younger generation who have decided to move away from fresh Guernsey cow’s milk.

Having said that, we do still have a loyal following.

60% of households who regularly consume a lactose-free milk said they choose the local market product over other brands."
