60% more bikes in Guernsey's cycle lanes since 2022

A local initiative is calling on the States to invest in the island's cycle lane infrastructure.

Guernsey's Better Journeys Project says it has seen a huge increase in cyclists since two years ago.

Its recent study has discovered more people are opting to cycle the morning commute rather than jump in the car.

It found 300 fewer cars per hour along Les Banques and 250 more bikes.

Barrie Duerden from the group is an advocate for people getting on bicycles. He found the results positive.

"It alleviates congestion, reduces carbon footprint and makes it much easier for those who absolutely need to drive like commercial vehicles and people with disabilities.

"If we are going to build more houses, we are going to have more traffic. The roads are congested enough already so why not encourage people to use bikes?

"Safety is a big issue so separating the traffic, having more cycle lanes and having more places people can park them would be superb."
